This totally awesome sunset took place on Thursday the 13th of April. The time was 8:18pm along the boardwalk of Eureka, CA.
This week's weather went from sunshine to wind to hail and rain all in a matter of 5 days. Monday was a beautiful day, so much that I had to pull over on the 101 to capture the yellow flowers shot with the traffic in the background. Next I though I would grab a shot of our newest feature at North Coast News - signage! I went to visit King Salmon during the latter part of the week where you can see overcast and scattered clouds above the beach. The weather was full of surprises this week and I look forward to showing off some of the weather shots I took in the next couple of days.
The month of March proved to be a wet month with rain, wind, hail and sunshine all throughout the North Coast. March weather shots were taken from King Salmon to the Marina, and the Eel River to downtown Eureka. Mother Nature has always had a way of showing us her strength and beauty. Although I have just started shooting weather shots over the last month I found that I have had to train my eye with the open ocean and the forever landscapes that are here on the North Coast. Some highlights this month were the yellow Tulips on the first day of spring as well as capturing cows taking it easy to the pink flamingos at the Sequoia Park and Zoo. A special "Thank You" to my producer Travis for airing these wonderful weather shots.
The first quarter has proven to be successful for award winning aerial cinematographer Halcyon Louis Simmons. So far, his first sell of the year with aerial footage of Las Vegas for foreign representative of current agent Paula Lumbard of Footagebank. The Las Vegas nose mount footage was shot in 2004 with the late helicopter pilot David Gibbs & assistant Greg Yanez. Currently Halcyon is working part time at North Coast News as a Television Production Assistant and attending Full Sail University as a full time student in Media Communications. Halcyon is scheduled to be Director of Photography on the feature film titled "Aerial San Francisco - The Paris of the West" due out soon and is also working on a script in development called "LA Exposed".

Friday's are the best here on the North Coast. It had been raining most of the week so it was a surprise to see Friday rain free. The sun had tried to make an appearance but the sky filled the palette with beautiful white fluffy clouds. This video was captured on my way to work off the 101 Highway just entering Eureka. Here is what I was able to capture for the 6 o'clock news on KAEF 23 ABC as our weather shot - Enjoy!
Earlier in the week I had to come up with a weather shot for work that was revealing more storms were on the way and also capture a little bit of blue sky. Not sure if my idea would be aired on the evening broadcast, I decided to head over to the Lost Coast Brewery which I pass everyday on my way into Eureka. The grounds of the brewery were very enchanting and with the blue sky & clouds, this would definitely make the statement. As it turns out, a couple of video shots were aired later that evening of the Lost Coast Brewery. The results shown below. Thanks Lost Coast Brewery and see you in May for that feature!
Behind The Scenes
Happy Friday to all! I was in charge today to get a couple of weather shots for our 6, 10 & 11 newscasts this evening. I did a behind the scenes of this gorgeous shot that was taken near the Marina with the Samoa bridge in the background. Although this behind the scenes shot was taken with my iPhone, the original video footage that airs on both Fox and ABC is taken with a Nikon D3300 with an 18-55mm 1:3.5. 30 fps @ f/18 200 asa. Overall a beautiful day in the North Coast. #KAEF23ABC #KBVU28Fox #HalcyonUAS #dpHalcyon
There was rain off and on for Thursday. On my way into work I wanted to capture something a little bit different. I remembered that on the 101 hwy just 8 miles away was Bear River Casino Hotel. It sits high on top of a hill overlooking the valley. Although today is quite gray, I believe I was able to capture the beauty of the North Coast. This video was taken close to 4pm on a flat turn off by the Gaming Commission. The aperture was f/16 - 200 ASA / 30 fps.
My name is Louis Halcyon Simmons. I am an award winning cinematographer and specialize in aerial cinematography. I have recently moved up to the north coast because of a new job with news production. The station I work for is KAEF 23 ABC & KBVU 28 Fox. I am a Television Production Assistant at the station. I help out where ever I am needed and also work on the floor as a cameraman or inside the control room working as a Sound Engineer. Sometimes I even get to go out on assignments and for the past month I have been capturing the weather shots that are aired with the upcoming segment teases. I have created this blog as I am currently attending Full Sail University as a full time student studying Media Communications. With this major I am having to brush up on my social media communication skills along with providing video assignments every week. I will start posting my activities from work combined with my assignments from school and hopefully I can start sharing a little bit of knowledge about the behind the scenes of my projects from work and school. I invite you to ask me questions about the news media industry and the drone industry and I will try my best to shed the best light. The reason why I have decided to put this blog up on HalcyonUAS site is to help me combine both the photography and video aspect from the ground to the air. I welcome your comments to me at: [email protected]. |
